An Intro to Ulrich

HO Collector‘s Fourth Quarter 2020 edition will present an overview and timeline for one of the hobby’s more famous freight car kit makers: Ulrich. Started by Charles J. Ulrich (pictured on left visiting with an attendee at a 1964 trade show), the company’s metal freight car kits began arriving in the late 1940s.

In addition to its HO-scale freight car kit offerings, Ulrich produced a series of truck and trailer models, and produced a few operating accessories and structure kits. From its post-World War II beginnings through its eventually home in the Walthers product line, co-editor Tony Cook presents the models and provides comment and history on Ulrich for “An Intro to Ulrich” in this HO Collector article.

ABOVE: Introduced in 1948, Ulrich’s composite-side gondola was one of the longest freight car replicas available in HO scale at the time.
