When May 1, 1971 arrived and the fast runup to Amtrak’s launch was a reality, no equipment was dressed for the occasion. Not wanting to miss marketing recognition, Penn Central 4316 (later Amtrak 322) was provided with a one-of-a-kind livery.
ABOVE: Rapido Trains is sure to have a collectors item with its Amtrak 4316 release due in late 2021. The run is capped at 500 examples that will come with accurate livery and road-number specific details, as well as a wood presentation case.
The black scheme with Amtrak lettering and “pointless arrow” wrapping around the E8’s nose would not be repeated (outside of a similar scheme applied by TYCO for its F9A later in 1971, see image below).
Collectors will find this special Amtrak E8 offered among the first HO-scale E8A models from Rapido. The limited edition offering will come with an engraved wood case and additional materials marking Amtrak’s 50th anniversary.
