By 1980, Electro-Motive Division’s SD40-2 had proven its value to railroading with examples rostered around North American rails. While Life-Like offered HO its first “Dash 2” plastic model with its 1975 announced GP38-2… the six-axle SD40-2 remained elusive to 1:87. Then, as happens in the hobby, HO went from zero to more than three SD40-2s. This gray plastic shell is North American Diesel’s effort. Look for Tony Lucio’s “A Saga of Squandered Efforts: HO’s Early SD40-2s” in HO Collector‘s Fourth Quarter 2022 edition (available in October).
